Friday 25 November 2022

From the Head of College

Dear Parents and Caregivers

This final edition of The Week Ahead brings to a close a busy and very successful year at Concordia. Several closing services, events and celebrations over the past fortnight have confirmed the wonderful opportunities, rich learning experiences and programs on offer at Concordia, but most importantly our deep sense of community and relationships as a college. I thank you again for your support of and loyalty to the Concordia in 2022.  Thank you for the regular words of affirmation, encouragement, feedback and thanks which have been forthcoming throughout the year. I look forward to growing further and building on the current working relationship and partnership which you have with the College in 2023.

From the College Pastor

Christmas is coming鈥!

Well, we made it. Today is the last day for students, and staff will wrap up the school year with their Christmas service and dinner next Wednesday.

And what a year it has been!

With a delayed start due to a COVID wave in January, then masks, no camps, no events, and slowly a return to some sort of normality from Term 2 and certainly in the second half of the year. Concordia has proved to be a resilient community, we faced and overcame the challenges together and the recent celebrations 鈥 at last in community again - with musicals, presentation evenings, concerts and more bringing people together and inviting us to rejoice in all the good things that this year also brought. We are blessed with an amazing community, committed and caring students, families and staff, and have much to be thankful for.

Thank you & Good Bye

It has been an honour to serve the Concordia 女女视频 College community as the Director of Marketing and Enrolments for the past six years.

When I started here in January 2017, this website didn't exist. The Week Ahead was a PDF. There was no annual printed calendar. Our 2022 Year 12 graduates were just starting their secondary journey as Year 7 students.

A lot can change in six years!

Thank you to all the students, families and staff who have been so supportive and have helped to create this beautiful community we have here at Concordia. This really is a very special place.

I wish Mrs Belinda Sanders every success as she takes on the role of Director of Marketing and Enrolments. I know she will do a sensational job.

Although I am moving on from being a staff member at Concordia, I look forward to remaining a part of the community as a parent.

So, while this is me taking my chance to say goodbye as the Director of Marketing and Enrolments, I look forward to saying hello next year as Hannah's mum.

I wish you all a happy, safe and restful Christmas.

Mrs Bianca Coleborn

Project Based Learning at Concordia

Junior College

From the Junior College Directors

The end of every school year brings about a time for reflection, and as we look back on 2022 there are many things to celebrate. The student learning and achievement has been outstanding and the community spirit has been overwhelming. Concordia鈥檚 Junior College is an amazing place to work and learn in and we are all feeling very blessed.

JC Sport News

Junior College Inter-House Swimming Carnival 2022
Thursday 17 November the Junior College hosted its annual Inter-House Swimming Carnival at the Concordia Aquatic Centre, and what a fantastic day it turned out to be. There was a high level of participation with some amazing results from our swimmers.  From the first house war cry at 8.30am the students never stopped. Participation ranged from competing in their individual races through showing great house spirit and encouraging each other but most importantly having fun and enjoying the mateship that comes with sporting endeavours such as this day. It was also very nice to have our spectators back in mass, supporting our students in their races across the duration of carnival.

A big thankyou to all who assisted in some way, but special mention to the Parent Connect for the meal deal and coffee van (very popular), all staff officials for their flexibility and enthusiasm in various roles, ground and office staff and the SSC students and Parents who helped in timekeeping and Marshalling during the day, a fantastic effort. Finally, also thank you to Troy Chandler for his expertise with pool/event set up and recording.

From this carnival we will pick our Central Zone and QCIS representative teams for 2023.

Congratulations to the following Age Champions, and also to students involved in breaking records, and number of new age divisions records being created. A special mention must go to ALTUS as the winning house for 2022.

From the Director of Campus

Where to begin for the final The Week Ahead in what has been a gigantic year. As I review the calendar for the 2023 school year, I can鈥檛 help but wonder how the College is able to pack so much into four school terms. It can only be due to the incredible commitment of staff, students, and families that we are able to achieve all this in such a short amount of time.

Personally, I am so grateful for how welcome the community has made me feel in my first year at Concordia, and I am very excited about the future and continued growth ahead. I am commonly asked how my first year at Concordia has been. My response always centres on two things: 1) we have amazing students and 2) you won鈥檛 find a more hospitable community. What an amazing place to work and learn - Concordia truly is Queensland鈥檚 best kept secret!

World's Greatest Shave

On Tuesday 22 November, students and staff participated in the World鈥檚 Greatest Shave raising funds and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation. Initiated by Student Council 2023 President, Bella Gratwick, a number of staff and students shaved their heads, cut ponytails and coloured their hair.

The initial $4,000 target was exceeded quickly. Mr Pukallus set a target of $5,000 at which point he would shave his head. This was reached easily after the Student Council ran a successful Crazy Hair day and BBQ. As the total kept growing, Mr Prinsloo was encouraged to take the plunge and he publicly declared his willingness to shave his head if the target reached $8,000. Needless to say students rose to the challenge and Mr Prinsloo joined Mr Pukallus and Mrs McKenzie in shaving his head. With proceeds from the Student Council sales of hair colouring and food sales still to be added, the total was just over $8,600. An amazing outcome from a campaign that only started in Term 4.
