Dear Parents and Caregivers

What an excellent week we have had at Concordia celebrating our Co-curricular Ensembles and individual instrumental participants as well as our QCIS Athletics Team as they left their mark at their respective events.

Both our Junior and Senior College Ensemble students represented the College at the Toowoomba Eisteddfod, held at the Empire Theatre, with great distinction and outstanding results. In order of events the Stephen Street Campus [SSC] Flutes received a Highly Commended, SSC Big Band 2^nd place, Junior College Percussion [Year 6 Boys] 2^nd place, Concordia First Year [Year 5] 1^st place, Junior College Concert Band 3^rd place and SSC Concert Band 1^st place. It has been wonderful to see our Instrumental Music Program go from strength-to-strength with outstanding growth within the Junior College. Congratulations to all involved. Thank you to Ms. Christina Marangelli for her leadership in this area of College life and the Instrumental Music Staff for their motivation and encouragement of our students. If you want to see these wonderful performers in action, don’t forget to attend our Ensemble Concert in the College gym next week on Friday.

Congratulations to our QCIS Athletics Team [Year 5-12] who competed at the QCIS Inter-school Carnival on Monday. Concordia came away winning the percentage trophy as well as finishing 2^nd overall. With the 3 Championship Inter-school Carnivals [Swimming, Cross-country and Athletics] completed for 2023, we are proud to announce that our QCIS Teams have won 4 of the 6 trophies in 2023. What a great achievement as we continue to realign and fine-tune our Sports Program at Concordia. Thank you to Mr. Josh Biscoe for his work ethic and leadership in coordinating our sports program as well as Mr. Darryl Fry [Junior College], Mr. John Matthews and Mr. Col Anderton [Senior College] for their time and support of our athletes.

This week I would like to focus on supporting School Learning [Homework] at home and not turning this into a “chore” as a family. When parents support school learning at home, this shows our children that we truly value education and the College. Our job as a parent is to encourage them, support them and challenge them to learn and do their best. If you can instil in them the mindset that learning is a process, that is positive and enjoyable, they will grow up to be lifelong learners who thrive on challenges.

Parent involvement in educational activities with their children is associated with improved educational outcomes for all students. Children at all ages with parents interested and involved in their learning have a clear academic advantage. Children do not stop needing their parents because they get older, or because lives get busy. You don’t have to be strong academically yourself to have an impact on your child’s education. Evidence shows that you just have to be supportive and positive about learning.

Top tips:

Read with your child from an early age and encourage a positive attitude to learning from reading – both books and online.
Promote a positive mindset in your children to help them see the benefits and enjoyment that can be found in learning and improvement.
Don’t put too much pressure on them. Encourage them to be as good as they can be and help them plan how to improve.
Be willing to help with school learning [homework], even if that just means asking them questions.
Let them be independent learners and be there to support if they want to do the home learning themselves.
Encourage them to see mistakes as an important part of the learning process and help them to see how to use their mistakes to learn.
If school learning [homework] is causing stress or arguments, put it aside and take a break. Try again later and if there are still problems, contact the teacher to discuss solutions. [Acknowledgement: The Fathering Project]

Master Plan - Frequently asked Questions

What are we getting at the new campus in 2025?

Essentially, you’ll be getting a stronger cultural and educational experience for your children. Unifying on one campus will enable our philosophy of contemporary learning with innovative purpose-built facilities. By 2025 the new Junior Learning Centre and Early Learning Centre will be constructed and students will move in. Refer to the poster “An integrated campus provides a range of benefits” for extended points.

With students co-located the children will have more of an opportunity to “find their people”.

What is the landscaping plan?

Detailed landscaping is still to be developed. The intent is for thoughtfully landscaped outdoor areas that create beautiful spaces for our children to play and learn in. Plantings will be suitable to the Toowoomba climate.

CLC Book Week

We look forward to seeing what creative costumes our students (and staff!) come up with for book week. It is always an exciting and fun time of the year.

Just remember that book week is about connecting students with books and inspiring enthusiasm and passion for reading. Costumes definitely don’t have to be expensive or complicated! They can be made out of things you find around the house, or from what is already in their wardrobe.

Project Based Learning at Concordia

JC Year 3 Koojarewon Camp - 17 August

On Thursday 17 August 2023, our JC Year 3 students will be attending their first camp at the Koojarewon Youth Camp, Highfields. Please find attached a and for the camp.

Date: Thursday 17 to Friday 18 August
Transport: Bus

All students are to be dropped at Hume Street Campus by 8.30am. Children will be supervised by a teacher from 8am.
Students will depart Koojarewon Youth Camp at 1.30pm on Friday and returning to Hume Street Campus for pick up by parents from approx. 2.15pm.
Parking for both drop off and pick up is on the sports oval.

JC Year 1 Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary Excursion - 11 August

On Friday 11 August, the JC Year 1 students will be attending an excursion to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary (LPKS).

Please note the travel details as outlined in the attached

Students are required to be dropped at the Hume Street Campus by 7.15am for a 7.30am departure.
Students will return to their campus for a normal school pick up.

JC Year 6 Cairns Trip - Great Barrier Reef Education Experience Program

Our JC Year 6 class will depart and head to Cairns in September.

To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Queensland Government, through the Great Barrier Reef Education Experience Program, provided a subsidy to the school of $150.00 per student who will be attending the excursion.

We wish all of our Year 6 students, their teachers and our parent helpers, a safe trip. We look forward to following them each day through their Seesaw blogs.

Sports News and Term 3 Update

Friday Sport
Over the past two Fridays our students have been participating in the Inter-School Sport competition in both Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys Rugby, and Girls Netball. The students are enjoying the experience of competing with their mates in the initial weeks of games. Well done to all. I look forward to the weeks ahead and hearing the results of all these games to follow.

AFL “Auskick” Programs
Another program offered to our students currently, is the ever popular “Auskick” program that is in its third week. These are held after school on Tuesdays at WSC and Wednesdays at HSC. This is an initiative by AFL targeting grassroots development and participation of Primary aged students and runs for 6 weeks. Both campuses have recorded very strong numbers in attendance with these programs.

It has been fantastic hearing glowing reports about the the students’ involvement in these sessions and their competitiveness in a host of modified games and challenging drills. Well done!

On Monday 7 August our Prep class will be participating in the Primary School Nurse Health Readiness Program. We are a Queensland Government service that offers Free Vision Screening to all children enrolled in Prep. Participation in this free vision screening program is not a compulsory. If you do not wish for your child to participate in the screening, please fill in the consent form and indicate that you wish to decline screening.

Parents do not need to be present for screening, however if you would like to be, please contact Campus Reception to arrange this.

If your child is in Prep and you would like their vision screened, please complete a consent form using the below link or QR code. Consent forms must be submitted by Sunday 30 July 2023.

There are ten delicious flavours to delight. There’s even a cheese flavoured Doggie Dough for your special furry family members! The delicious cookie dough is only available through fundraising and is not sold in stores, so stock up.

The Dads Social Golf afternoon is back again for 2023!

Dads and their mates are invited to join Parent Connect on the green for an afternoon of golf, good company and casual drinks. Hacks & Pros welcomed!!

Where: Toowoomba City Golf Club
Time: Meet at 12pm for a 12.30pm tee off
Game Play: 2 man Ambrose over 9 holes followed by coldies in the clubhouse

The Parent Connect will be running our annual Father’s Day Stall on Thursday 31 August. This year there will be both $5.00 and $10.00 gifts available to purchase.

Gifts - Your child/ren may like to purchase a present for Dads, Grandads or any other special fatherly role models. Money will need to be brought to school on Thursday 31 August. If you would like your child to purchase more than one gift (maybe for Grandad?), there may be an opportunity for them to do so.

On Monday our students competed in the QCIS Track and Field competition, the last of the three championship competitions for the QCIS Association. Our 10–19-year-old team gave it their all and emerged victorious, winning the percentage trophy and finishing second in the overall points. An incredible team effort.

Greetings to everyone

I feel blessed to be able to come to work and view a beautiful sunrise from the office window. Today, an especially beautifully one for many to enjoy as our students boarded the bus to Scots College, Warrick for the QCIS meet.

It is great to see so many students, 2 buses, getting involved, pushing themselves to achieve personal goals and breaking records while at the same time representing the College. Working together as a team and displaying great sportsperson ship.

A huge shout out to all who participated. Keep a lookout on the Facebook and Week Ahead for the school pics.

This evening our Year 9 boarders attended the Googa information evening. Our students look forward to attending Googa every year. During the holidays, please go through the check list with your child to ensure they have everything required please. It is important that each students brings the plastic dishes and cutlery, sleeping bag, mat, towels, and warm clothes including a jacket. It gets very cold out there.

Sporting events such as Touch and Volleyball are a big draw card to Boarding students. They all love getting off site and they like to meet other students from other schools. The Girls touch team are doing exceptionally well and have pulled together to display great skill and determination. Our boys’ teams are also doing well with more wins than loses. Well done Chaps. We as a boarding house rely heavily on school staff to drive, coach, and supervise. All students are reminded that they must go to trainings and to games. This is commitment and a skill that all young people must apply as a team member. I do hope to get along to watch one evening and I encourage you all if you are in town on a Monday or Tuesday night feel free to call us and I can direct you to where the sporting event is located.

A gentle reminder to all parents that all students are required to own their own computers. Loan Computer are only lent on a short-term basis. Please investigate purchasing Laptops for 2024 or Term 4 2023 as this is an investment into your child’s education.

On Saturday we all slipped into “Barbie Land “at the movies. We all loved it. A stroll down memory lane.

Currently we have Ayaka Koitabashi from Japan enjoying Boarding life and school here at Concordia. Ayaka is enjoying her time and has become great friends with Bella. They both love playing games and Ayaka is teaching Origami to Bella and the Tutors. I have included a couple of pics in this edition. We will miss you when you return home at the end of this term Ayaka.
