The Week Ahead - Term 4, Week 2
Monday 10 October to Friday 14 October 2022
From the Head of College
Dear Parents and Caregivers
It鈥檚 my pleasure to welcome back every family to Term 4. I trust that you have had a relaxing and safe term break as a family. The student body needs to be commended on how quickly they have settled back into school routines this week. Thank you for your support in ensuring that your student[s] presents well in their day and formal uniform both at and away from school as per the full uniform requirements. We have emphasised the need for them to be great ambassadors for Concordia and their family when they are out and about.
The next seven weeks will no doubt keep us busy as we look at finishing up well by graduating our Years 6 and 12 students respectively, support our Years 5 and 11 students as they step up as our new Senior cohorts and leaders for 2023 and hear about our Year 9 students thriving and growing at Googa over the next four weeks. At the same time, our Prep and Year 7 students are almost done with their first year at primary and high school, respectively. Everyone is invited to be part of and hang on for this exhilarating finish to the school year at Concordia.
Congratulations to all our Year 12 students as they wrap up their time at Concordia next week with their Recognition and Valedictory Evening on Monday and a closing Chapel on Friday. I hope to see many of you at the various events planned for your students. These events and rites of passage will become life-long memories as we graduate these students into the adult world.
I am excited to announce that the College鈥檚 caf茅, The Edge Caf茅, will be opening again for business on Monday. This has come about after months of discussions, planning and visioning for this venue. It is also very fitting that the services to be provided will be hosted by our current Year 10 Certificate III Hospitality students. The Edge Caf茅 will initially be open every Monday from 8am to 9.15am and we are hoping to extend the opening times and menu over the coming weeks. You are warmly invited to drop in, sit down and enjoy the atmosphere or take away a coffee or hot chocolate for only $3. I need to acknowledge the planning and work done behind the scenes by Mrs Jo Tessmer in making this venture possible.
Next Wednesday we will be celebrating the official opening of the refurbished Lecture Theatre at the Stephen Street Campus. We are looking forward to hosting those families, both past and current, who have bought a seat in the lecture theatre. Those who have attended either a meeting or learning session in the venue have already given it rave reviews in terms of comfort and convenience.
Our Junior College has also begun their Christmas for the Bush Service Learning project for Term 4. This wonderful project is being run in conjunction with Care Outreach Australia. The various items collected will, over the coming weeks, be distributed among families in regional Queensland just in time for Christmas. Thank you for your wonderful support of this project. The more I read about the latest research on gratitude and service learning, the more obvious it has become that reaching out to others on a regular basis as well as being appreciate and thankful for our daily comforts are critical for good mental wellness.
Staffing update: It鈥檚 with very mixed emotions that I have received the resignation of Mrs Bianca Coleborn, our Director of Marketing and Enrolments, for the end of the year. Bianca has been an integral part of the College鈥檚 journey over the past six years and an important member of the Leadership Team. Bianca has indicated that it is time for a new challenge as part of her growth mindset and time for fresh eyes in our place too. Bianca and her family will remain deeply connected to Concordia, but this time wearing a parent hat and hopefully a few coaching stints too. We will acknowledge and celebrate her legacy and achievements at our end of year functions. Please keep Bianca in your prayers during this time of finishing up at Concordia and her transition to her new workplace. The College has begun a recruitment process to find our next Director of Marketing and Enrolments.
Please remember that I propagate a strong open-door policy as I work for and with you at Concordia. Stay safe and healthy and every blessing for a great Term 4.
Yours in Christ

Welcome to Term 4
Welcome to the last term for 2022! Isn鈥檛 this year going fast?
Term 4 is always filled with lots of celebrations and recognitions for the hard work of the year, and of course it ends with the lead in to that joyful time, Christmas. But there is also a lot of work shoehorned into these eight short weeks: Year 12s have their final exams, there is a lot of assessment and reporting and a number of special events, and not to forget, the Year 9s have their formative month at Googa.
This week we completed our Walk my Way challenge with both primary campuses hosting a special event on Thursday. Together with the event at the end of Term 3 at SSC, where students engaged very well, some walking over 10 laps of the course around the school, we exceeded our goal of sending 100 students to school for a year in an African refugee camp. Our community raised $2848 (by the time of writing 鈥 the system will be open for another week - ), which means nearly 110 children can be sent to school through the connections and work of ALWS. I am blown away by the engagement of our students, staff and parents and thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your support of this cause.
Having recently returned from Germany where I was able to visit my parents after a pandemic enforced hiatus, I am reminded again how incredibly blessed we are in this country. This leads me into thankfulness and praise, and challenges me to share the amazing gifts we have with those who struggle to even survive.
Education can be a way out of poverty and dependence and when we watched some of the videos shared by ALWS rep, Pastor Martin Scharnke at SSC (unfortunately, due to illness Martin wasn鈥檛 able to attend the primary chapels, but we did share the videos) and heard of the dreams of the children in these very basic schools, we recognise what an important contribution we are making to the future of over 100 young people.
Jesus says these words as part of a parable recorded in Matthew 25:
鈥楾ruly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.鈥
As a Christian community we recognise both the blessings we have received and the responsibility that comes with it. And we rejoice in the opportunities to serve those far and near with the gifts entrusted to us.
May our Lord bless you and be close to you throughout this busy final term!

Confirmation at ELF starting this Sunday!
Confirmation at ELF (the congregation worshipping at Concordia) is starting this Sunday!
Worship is at 9am followed by Confirmation, which will start at 11am.
We are meeting in Emmanuel鈥檚 brand-new space at the end of the South Street car park. You will be asked to fill out a form for your child when Confirmation begins so that we have contact and emergency details etc. After that feel free to leave and return when we finish at 1pm.
One of the main goals of the first session is to break the ice, get to know each other a little bit, and open a conversation about the first topic - Creation. I will also be providing a brief overview of the Confirmation course and we'll explore expectations, goals and dreams around what the Confirmation course is all about. A basic lunch will be provided together with a special treat of ice cream!

Ensemble Showcase - Progress and Potential
We warmly invite parents to attend this special concert in the Concordia Chapel. This concert is a public performance which will display the hard work that the Year 5 cohorts have put into learning their new skill - playing an instrument. There will be some fun pieces you are familiar with, mixed with some music specifically written to focus on instrument techniques. The concert will demonstrate the students鈥 ability to work as an ensemble, follow direction from a conductor and perform publicly on their instrument.

WSC Trivia Night - Friday 4 November
One of the highlights on the Warwick Street Campus calendar each year is the P&F Trivia Night. Each year we have seen this event grow in numbers as our community comes together for a night of fun, laughter and friendly competition. I encourage everyone in our community to come along to enjoy the fun. Family and friends from outside our community are also most welcome to attend.
This year, we are delighted to be holding the annual Trivia Night on Friday 4 November, with Lee Faulkner from MMM Radio as our host for the evening. To ensure we continue to provide a wonderful event, we need some assistance from our community. If you are able to assist with organising the night, being a sponsor, donating prizes or even putting a table of guests together to support the event, we would be very grateful for your assistance. I understand that everyone is busy, but if you could give some of your time, even in a small way, it would be appreciated.
If you would like more information about the Trivia Night and what you can do to support the event, please contact me or email Mrs Angharad Lubbock, angharad.lubbock@gmail.com for further details.
Tickets are on sale now! To purchase your tickets or a table, click here.
The WSC staff are already studying up for the occasion and we look forward to seeing you there!

From the Junior College Directors
Term 4 is upon us and we are already at the end of a very busy week. We hope that you have returned feeling refreshed after the holiday break and had time to spend with family and friends. We could say that Term 4 is the busiest term of the year, but every term seems to be busy at school. Please take the time to read through The Week Ahead each week as all information about events occurring over the next eight weeks will be advertised in this space.
At Concordia, it is important for our students to be aware of the community around them and how we can serve others. Yesterday students participated in Walk My Way to raise money for Australian 女女视频 World Services. Thank you to all our families for your kind donations. Pastor Thomas informed our students in Chapel that we have raised enough money to send 110 African students to school for a year. What an amazing achievement.
This week the Junior College has launched our annual Christmas for the Bush appeal. Christmas for the Bush is the major annual event for the Care Outreach group and assists families who live and work on the land with gifts, hampers and financial assistance. This is a special time of the year for the Junior College as our Year 1 classes take charge of collecting and organising the donations and then leading us in our Christmas for the Bush Chapel service. We would appreciate any support our families are able to give to this very worthy cause.
We are fortunate to have the Concordia Aquatic Centre at Stephen Street Campus and this term swimming lessons have commenced. These lessons will be an important time for our Years 3-6 students as they will be training hard to be ready for our Inter-House Swimming Carnival on Thursday 17 November. More information for this event will be available in the coming weeks.
We look forward to sharing many special events with our Year 6 students as they get ready to move into their middle schooling and of course, finishing the year with our campus鈥 Musicals. More information about these events will be in The Week Ahead each week.

Prep to Year 2 Piano Fingers Author Visit
The Prep to Year 2 students will be going on an excursion to The Lighthouse Toowoomba to view the Caroline Magerl鈥檚 Piano Fingers Exhibition.
The author we are going to see is Carolyn Magerl who is the author and illustrator of the 2021 CBCA Honour Book Nop which we have in both of our library collections and Hasel and Rose. Her latest book Piano Fingers is currently on order and we will have a copy at each campus by the beginning of next term. In the weeks leading up to the event, I will be sharing Nop and Piano Fingers with the students to familiarise them with her writing. Her stories have themes of friendship and resilience and her illustrations are beautiful.
Caroline Magerl was born in a small German town near Frankfurt and came to Australia when she was two. Soon after, in a suburban Sydney backyard, her parents built a yacht which became a home and way of life. Until Caroline was fourteen, the family sailed the east coast of Australia. At sixteen, Caroline joined another yacht, crossing the Tasman Sea to New Zealand. After the return voyage she worked as a cook, painting in her spare time. Caroline now works as an artist, illustrator and printmaker and received an ASA children's picture book illustrators' grant to work on Hasel and Rose. She has exhibited widely overseas and in Australia.
The author visits for Caroline Magerl鈥檚 Piano Fingers Exhibition have been booked in and are as follows.

Stephen Street Campus
From the Director of Campus
Welcome back for Term 4!
It was farewell to our Year 9 students on Tuesday as they hopped on the bus to Googa to set up camp and put themselves to the test; relying on each other and only basic necessities to get by.
At Chapel on Wednesday, I offered a devotion based on our theme Bible verse of the year 鈥 鈥淚 can do all things through Christ who strengthens me鈥 鈥 Philippians 4:13. My reflection on this verse is that it has been wildly taken out of context historically by those who use it to suggest that they can do anything and everything (including winning boxing matches) because Christ strengthens them.
In fact, the verse comes in the middle of a letter from St Paul where he talks about his experiences with both abundance and suffering, and how his endurance has been made possible by his faith in Christ. He is not pointing to some miraculous superpower, but rather a sense of true contentment, where he can face all things through his trust in the Lord. So, with respect to our Year 9 students, the Googa experience has a different aim to other camps where the sole focus may be on fun and adventure.
Googa offers students a chance to be content, to learn that life is more precious when we are with others without unnecessary distractions. We look forward to sharing some updates throughout the students鈥 time away.
Year 12 final weeks
I am sure that the Year 12 students will be riding a roller coaster of emotions at the moment as they complete their final weeks of schooling. While there is the obvious serious side to things as they prepare for their final exams, we also know how important it is for them to have time to enjoy their final days together as a group, and to celebrate everything they have achieved. This was kick started by their Valedictory Dinner on Friday 16 September. All students looked stunning as they arrived on what ended up being an amazingly blessed spring afternoon. I wish to thank Mrs Leah Bowes for her tireless efforts to organise and prepare the students for this milestone event.
Next week, the Year 12 students will have their alternative program week, with lots of activities and celebrations. The Recognition and Valedictory evening at USQ on Monday 10 October will, I am sure, be a fitting acknowledgement of the tremendous talent and hard work that this group is known for.
Year 10 Peer Support Training
Today our Year 10 students commence training to be involved in our peer support program in 2023. This is a fundamental part of our Pastoral Care program, where our Year 11 students work with incoming Year 7 students as they transition into the high school environment. This training will help develop the Year 10 students ability to help lead and facilitate discussion and group activities with the younger students. The training will continue over several weeks.
Year 7 Oktoberfest Excursion
Next Thursday 13 October, our Year 7 students will be travelling to the RNA Showgrounds in Brisbane for Oktoberfest. Unique to Australia, Oktoberfest for Teens is the largest German language schools鈥 event in Australia. The festival is an unforgettable educational day of great German fun, food, competitions, entertainment and most importantly language. I haven鈥檛 been invited, but I might try and sneak in as this sounds like my dream day!
Have a great week.
Yours in faith,
Mr Jamie Pukallus
Director of Campus

Over the recent holidays, Concordia Turbo Jets swimmers headed to the Australian Country Championships in Darwin. The club had amazing success, with one gold, three silver and six bronze medals.
Concordia students, Victoria and Michael had the following results:
- Victoria Richards: silver 50m breaststroke

This meet was an amazing experience for our swimmers and we are very keen to attend next year with a greater number of swimmers.
Boarding
Boarding News
Hello to all our families. Term 4 has arrived and the countdown has begun to Senior exams and our Year 12 students, Chrissy and Bradley, bidding us all farewell as they venture into the big world on their individual journeys in life. Times like this are when we, as staff, feel a great sense of satisfaction that our job as mentors and role models has been fulfilled. I would like to take this opportunity to wish them both all the best and to thank them for their leadership in boarding.
As our students reacquaint themselves with the Boarding timetable, house rules and dress code, I would like to remind you all of the importance that your child has his or her clothing clearly named to assist our Laundry service to return clothing in individual baskets.
Aerosols are not permitted in students' rooms and we will be calling an amnesty in Week 2 in regards to this. All students are fully aware of this so, for future reference, we ask that when purchasing your child鈥檚 toiletries, please purchase roll-on deodorant. Aerosols will be returned to students at the end of the term.
Uniform dress codes and hairstyles 鈥 This is monitored on a daily basis and while most students are conforming there are a few who continue to push boundaries. Please encourage your child to respect the College rules by following the school uniform dress code.
Make up and coloured nail polish are not part of the school uniform.
Lastly, mobile phones are not to be used at school. Boarders who have their phones confiscated by the school will have consequences put in place by Houseparents.
This weekend our students will be going to Ten Pin Bowling and shopping at Grand Central.
I am currently on leave and will return at the beginning of Week 4 but am contactable on 0490 890 917 if needed or you can make direct contact with our wonderful Dorm staff. Jane, Alexis, Sarrah and Emily on 0490 890 916. Mr Andrew is also contactable on 0458 827 551.
Hope you enjoy our photos for this week.
Daisy Combo Gadd has had a great season playing Rugby League. Well done, Daisy!
Bradley and Chrissy looked fantastic for their Valedictory Dinner.
The Year 12 Boarder Recognition dinner was a huge success with the traditional handover from Year 12 to Year 11. Big thanks to the Years 9 and 10 servers on the night, the spectacular cooks who produced a delicious meal and also a big thanks to all parents, teachers and friends who attend this special night.
Until next week, take care and stay safe.
