The Week Ahead - Term 2, Week 7
Monday 31 May to Friday 4 June 2021
From the Head of College
In the coming week, the Directors of the Concordia 女女视频 College Future Foundation and College Council will be launching the 2021/22 Concordia 女女视频 College Annual Giving Appeal. The Foundation has two key focal points; firstly, to support students to attend the College through scholarship and secondly, to support the future building Masterplan through directed tax-deductible gifts.
In the last week, the Foundation has distributed the first scholarship funds. An anonymous donor from outside of the immediate College community gave a significant gift to support the education of a student, and this is the start of several additional scholarships to be distributed in the years ahead. Gifts to the Future Foundation Scholarship Fund are tax deductible and details outlining how to contribute to this fund will be available as the Annual Giving campaign rolls out this week.
College Council has begun the process of developing a Masterplan that will support the current and future Concordia strategic plans. An announcement regarding the architectural company who will lead this process will be made at the beginning of Semester 2/2021 and community focus groups will be actioned to seek feedback from the College community. The second tax deductible fund is for buildings and fixed capital items as determined by the College Council and in line with the Strategic Plan. The Future Foundation Building Fund is a tax-deductible fund and details outlining how to contribute to this fund will be available via the Annual Giving campaign.
In the 2021 Annual Giving Campaign, the goal for the Building Fund will be to upgrade the current Stephen Street Lecture Theatre to allow all students across the College to learn in modern 21st Century facilities. Members of our wider community are invited to sponsor a lecture theatre seat on behalf of families or individuals. In return, donors will be listed on a recognition board inside the theatre and chairs marked with plaques. Please be involved as we seek to support the learning of current and future students.
75th Anniversary celebrations
At the same time and attached to the Annual Giving literature, we will be releasing further details of the 75th Anniversary celebrations to be held in September 2021. With the COVID restrictions earlier in the year, we were unable to celebrate with the wider community; however, we did launch the year on Founder鈥檚 Day for students and staff. Please keep an eye out for information that will now become available for all members of our community. I look forward to celebrating the birthday of this great 女女视频 school with members of the Concordia Community.
Kind regards
Mr Adrian Wiles

#CupRescue Schools Program
The College has joined the #CUPRESCUE Schools Program with 7-Eleven Rangeville. Over 1 billion cups end up in landfill each year because they鈥檙e lined with plastic and need to be processed separately to be recycled. Together with Simply Cups, 7-Eleven is leading the cup recycling revolution in Australia so that takeaway cups can be collected, processed and recycled.
Cup recycling units will be available at each campus. For more information, .
Kokoda Challenge Fundraising
The Kokoda Challenge will be held in the Gold Coast hinterland (Mudgeeraba) on the weekend of 17 and 18 July 2021. Students and support crews are tested both mentally and physically throughout this gruelling trek, but the achievement is well worth it and will never be forgotten.
There is a fundraising component to the challenge which requires that the students raise a minimum of $650 per team to go to the Kokoda Challenge youth program for under privileged youth. If you would like to make a donation to support our students please head to the links below.

From the Director
It is with sadness that I have received Emma Owen鈥檚 resignation this week. Her husband has begun a job in Brisbane and Emma will be relocating to Brisbane as well. Yes, I did try to get her to drive backwards and forwards each day but to no avail. Emma鈥檚 final date is unknown at this point, as it depends on the sale of her house. In the meantime, we will be advertising for a teaching and learning assistant so that our MiniLit program will continue. We do wish Emma all the very best with her move. She has been a huge blessing to us, and we will miss her dearly.
HSC Communication with Parents
We are tidying up our chains of communications. Please note the following:
- Our CLC App is our main source of communication 鈥 notifications, The Week Ahead, calendar, links to Parent Lounge etc.
- On occasions, a reminder flag may be placed into Seesaw to remind parents to look in TWA for details of a particular event.
- Email will be used for minimal purposes.
- All details of events will be in TWA about our events and app notifications will be sent.
- All events will be left in TWA until the event has finished.
If you can鈥檛 find something or we have missed something, please email your classroom teacher or our Reception AdminHSC@concordia.qld.edu.au and let us know. We are invested in ensuring that we have all of the right communication in the right place at the right time.

Warwick Street Campus
From the Director
Students at WSC are focusing on service to others over the coming weeks. Through our service learning we are encouraging the students to understand the needs in the community around us and how we can work to support these needs. This week our focus is on aged care residents and how we can let them know that we are thinking of them. To do this, the students have been creating cards and bookmarks with their buddies to send to aged care communities. It is important for us all to remember that you are never too young or old to make a difference in someone鈥檚 life. I am sure these items will certainly make a difference to many people.
As we head into the cooler months, the students are needing to wear more layers of clothing. Please make sure all jumpers and jackets are clearly named, as inevitably, the students will peel off layers throughout the day. Could I also ask parents to be mindful of what is acceptable for school when getting your child鈥檚 hair cut? We have seen some extremely short styles with the addition of tracks recently and these are not acceptable for school. If you have any questions or concerns about any part of the uniform, please refer to our Uniform Guide which can be found on Parent Lounge.
Congratulations to all of our Years 3 to 6 students who participated in the Ball Games Carnival this afternoon. This was the last event on our Inter-House Track and Field calendar this year. A special thanks to Mr Fry for organising another mammoth term of athletics events.

Stephen Street Campus
From the Director of Campus
Last night, Concordia hosted the Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) Annual Dinner on the Downs in our Stephen Street Campus Function Centre. All sectors including University, Catholic, Independent and State Education were well represented at the dinner and appreciated the opportunity to hear Adaire Donaldson speaking on the very important topic of consent, rape, parties, social media and the law. The strong takeaways from the evening was the continuing need for families, schools and communities to educate and work with our young people in this space.
On Tuesday, our athletics team heads down to Scots PGC College, Warwick to participate in the QCIS Cross Country Carnival. We wish our athletes all the best as they test themselves on this challenging course.
We are currently in NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK. With this year鈥檚 theme being MORE THAN A WORD. RECONCILIATION TAKES ACTION. Please take a moment to read about the focus of this week below.
Reconciliation Australia鈥檚 theme for 2021, , urges the reconciliation movement towards braver and more impactful action.
Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians 鈥 as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation. At the heart of this journey are relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
Finally, a reminder that we are entering the 鈥渂usiness end鈥 of the term with students finalising their assessments for the term. As a parent myself, I know the added pressure that this period places on them. Over the weekend, I encourage students to take time to check their assessment calendars for the next two weeks and to plan out how they will meet their assessment commitments while also allocating time for recreation and sleep.
Mr Jason Smith
Director of Campus

Boarding
Boarding News
With the sunshine streaming through my window, I am reflecting over the past week and anticipating the next one. A slight touch of a black frost likeness, without the frost, is the way I would describe our morning. Each day has been filled with sunshine. Great weather reflects on how we are all feeling and especially in a boarding environment, it tends to set the mood.
Well done to all those who have continued to show commitment by attending all external sporting activities especially in this cold weather.
Our Learning in Residence program has four tutors on duty in the Library every night to engage with and support your child with their homework. This at times can be testing, however, with lots of patience and encouragement from our tutors and willing ears from the students, we are all making progress. Please remind your children when they next ring home that there are also many tutoring sessions with teachers available on various days throughout the week. These has proven beneficial to those students who have taken up the opportunity, especially our Senior students. We will continue to remind students of what is available to them.
National Boarding Week 鈥 Last Friday was the day we celebrated National Boarding Week as it was also National Boarding School Staff day as well. Staff set up a special afternoon tea with tasty sweet treats and biscuits. Smiles were many.
On Sunday morning, the girls cooked homemade pancakes for everyone. The boys especially enjoyed the treat along with staff.
Board games in the rec room on Friday nights are a huge hit with the students and Miss Amaris. The boys are slowly joining in. Our gaming area in the rec room has a very positive vibe as it creates a social atmosphere with social interacting.
Our girls showed the boys how it was done at bowling over the weekend. The boys' team got off to a shaky start but regained confidence towards the end, although not enough to outdo the girls. Stuart Larsen excelled and displayed great skill with five strikes and the second highest score. Jahaarn, for a first timer, did really well with one strike and 3rd highest score. Jack was a tad slow to start and Mason, Patrick and Leroy gave it their all. The girls, lead by Chrissy Watson, outshone the boys with strikes and accuracy. Daisy, with her broken fingers, bowled left handed and managed a pretty good score. Young Bella never gave up even though the bowling ball had a mind of its own! Yelanka was the girls' wild card. A quiet, unassuming natural with three strikes. Kara and Kasha bowled some great balls which in the end gave the girls a score of 443, outplaying the boys 407. Looking forward to the next challenge!
May you all have a great week.
