Page Turner Packs – Pick Up Yours Today!
We all know that literacy is vital for education and for lifelong learning, but did you also know that reading for pleasure can benefit for our mental and physical health? The act of reading for pleasure can help with anxiety, create a sense of connection, and can help to lower your heart rate and relax your body.
We know that encouraging our young people to read can be an uphill battle. Often, we are competing with friends, social media and computer games in trying to convince our young people to pick up a book. Recent research (Gagan-Spriggs, 2023) shows that one influencing factor in persuading young people to read is seeing people that they look up to read and take an interest in reading. This could be a parent. Older sibling, teacher or coach. Young people enjoy also the social aspects of reading, which we can see play out in the popularity of trends such as #booktok (book reviews on TikTok).
Taking all of this into account, we are introducing ‘Page Turner Packs!’ These are mini book clubs in a box and come with multiple copies of a book, discussion cards and activities related to the book that they whole family can enjoy together. You could even recruit extended family to join in! The idea being that you all read the same book and have conversations as a family and enjoy the activities together.
The books are aimed at years 4-9 but can be enjoyed by any age group.
Our Page Turner Packs can be borrowed from any campus- please get in touch with me (Heidi.edwards@concordia.qld.edu) to borrow your box

State Honours Ensemble and Australian Honours Ensemble 2024 Success!
During the September holidays, the College had two students participate in very prestigious music events.
Kaylee Cowan on voice at the State Honours Ensemble Event (Sept. 26-28) and Samuel Lawrence at the Australian Honours Program event (Sept. 25-28). Samuel, our Instrumental Captain had to send in a video nomination to be successful and being Australia-wide, is an achievement that is quite rare and to be celebrated!
The ensemble programs are an educational program for music students that help extend and encourage their pursuit of musical excellence. Students need to be nominated by their school to apply before they are then selected from a list of criteria. Concordia has had student representatives in all of the programs this year and it just goes to show how much growth our students are willing to access. Congratulations to Kaylee and Sam who should be very proud of their commitment, achievements and attitude throughout the programs.

JC Christmas for the Bush
It has become a tradition in our Junior College to support the amazing work of Care Outreach by contributing to their Christmas For The Bush program.
Care Outreach has been supporting outback families for over 30 years. Christmas for the Bush is an annual event, delivering Christmas hampers and gifts to struggling families in rural and remote regions. Farming families work incredibly hard. Loss of income, isolation and depression are some of the issues these families deal with on a daily basis. Care Outreach works to bring encouragement, support and hope to farming families in need.
In Term 4, the Junior College is again supporting Care Outreach with their Christmas for the Bush appeal. You can help by donating...
- Non-perishable food and Christmas treats
- Toys and family gifts
- Toiletries
- Pre-paid visa cards
Donation baskets have been placed in every classroom. 100% goes to our farmers! For specific needs, please visit and click on the 'Christmas for the Bush' tab.
Care Outreach are excited to have our support again this year, and we look forward to assisting their Christmas for the Bush campaign. Thank you for considering this worthwhile appeal.
Christmas for the Bush will conclude with a Junior College Chapel Service lead by our Year 1 students in the SSC Chapel on Friday 1 November at 9.30am. Everyone is invited to come along.
JC Prep Pevan & Sarah Concert Excursion - Wednesday 23 October
On Wednesday 23 October we will be going on an excursion to The Empire Theatre to watch Pevan & Sarah.
Pevan and Sarah are a subscription service that create educational content to engage children in early learning. They sing songs and create games that we use daily in our classroom for Math, English and Daily transitions. We were very excited to see that they were coming to Toowoomba in person.
Please for all the details and provide permission in Parent Lounge if you haven't already done so.
